Summer is drawing to a close and people across the country are dusting off their beer steins and preparing their favorite Sausage and Kraut recipes, eager for some festive fun. That’s right – it’s time to celebrating German heritage with some tantalizing Oktoberfest recipes. And what better way to do that than this enticing Sauerkraut dish?

Did you know? Oktoberfest’s roots are actually tied to the wedding celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The first Oktoberfest was held just outside of Munich in 1810.

Americans love an excuse to celebrate good food and beer, and Oktoberfest is now part of American culture with more than 140 celebrations across the United State every year. Sausage and Kraut is easily both an American tradition and a German gift to us. American Oktoberfest gatherings feature traditional German musicians, Marzen beers, German sausages…and would not be complete without a good Sauerkraut recipe. Which is what brings us to today’s recipe, of course, courtesy of Great Lakes Kraut.
